Lawson Group ~ First Geology Field Course

The Mission of the Geological Association at Berkeley is to further an interest among Undergraduates in the geological sciences, as well as promote a sense of community in a learning environment for those involved in the study of geology. Our goal is to present an alternative source of academic enrichment to compliment formal study while offering a broader sense of community to those interested in geology.

Someone every Berkeley student should know: Andrew Lawson (1861-1952) was one of the first geology professors at Berkeley. He was appointed byLeConte in 1890 and retired in 1928 but remained active until his death from pneumonia in 1952, shortly after his youngest son was born (in 1950). He taught the first field geology course in America, discovered the San Andreas fault and is known as a mineralogist. The mineral lawsonite is named after him.
